Ryan grimaced slightly looking at the latest status report from Preston, with the Orbs long since dismissed their real mission of scientific exploration was slightly hindered. They'd discovered an incredible source of life and to keep them all commissioned they couldn't risk exploring it further.
Now answering for what had actually occurred would be a different challenge, as even equipped with all the data from the 'shakedown' Ryan still had a challenge in making things seem close enough to regulatory as possible. Life had been protected and to anyone who'd ever served in Security it had been a successful mission.
But now came the answering for it, doubtlessly Anderson had reported back and aroused suspicon over the nature of the Akira's shakedown cruise and just how close it had come to the Jenkata Nebula.
Enor sat back, his weary eyes studying the communications display. How long had it been since that young technician told him the system would be back online? What was it ten, fifteen, maybe twenty minutes ago? He glanced at his chrono and frowned- it was forty minutes. "Shouldn't this place be a museum by now?" He wondered out loud. From behind the desk the young man poked his head out smiling sheepishly.
"Sorry sir! I am almost d- oops! Ah! There! That should fix it!"
The display sputtered for a minute. Jolias frowned and then decided to offer the young man some help and thwacked the display with his palm. The screen blinked to life and he grinned "I should have went into engineering instead of science." He slid his hand over the console and tapped his commbadge "operations open a channel to Starbase Zetari." He glanced at the young man who was slipping items back into the bulky tool kit "good work."
"Zetari?" Enor watched as the screen fizzled awkwardly "Starbase Zetari, this is Admiral Jolias Enor. I have been given command of Starfleet operations in the Alpha and Gamma quadrants. Please report your situation." He waited, looked at the technician "is this working?" The young man just threw up his arms in an 'I don't know' shrug.
Ryan raised an eyebrow, he hadn't expected a garbled signal but likely those in the Pit were working on it. Soon enough it didn't take long before the picture on the view screen cleared, despite the occasional flicker or two.
"Morning Admiral, our situation is currently operational ready." Ryan said with emphasis, even with the station at a time of calm it was still fully capable of whatever requirements came. "We are pending numerous leave requests following a successful shakedown of the USS Mjolnir."
While the Orbs had been a legitimate danger to the station revealing such to Fleet was that much worse, as knowledge of such life and such a potential power source far too dangerous to that life itself.
"That's good to hear commander." Just then his yeoman appeared at the edge of the office with the PADD he had requested several minutes earlier but now it was slightly too late. He smiled at the screen and gestured slightly with his head for the young woman to approach and hold up the PADD. Squinting slightly he looked just past the edge of the screen reading the information on the PADD like one would a teleprompter.
"I see you have recently taken command, so it seems we are in a similar situation. Fleet operations are current convoluted however if there is anything you need commander feel free to contact us." Enor finally jerked his head away from the PADD and focused on the screen with a smile "the transition there has gone well?"
Ryan smirked a bit, if there was ever a more open-ended question he hadn't heard it yet. "As well as can be expected given the abruptness, sir. We were midway through the shakedown when commander Akasy and I were informed."
Ryan nodded as that part itself was truth enough. "I'm happy to report the ship has passed all performance requirements. As far as things in the area itself, it has been actually rather quiet."
The Watchtower sensor array deployed within the nebula along the Dominion border had showed very little activity at all following the return of the Orbs to their home. "I would perhaps ask that the various ships in the area find another depot for spare parts? I admit a shipyard gives us capability sir, but hours are hours." It was particularly difficult with the holidays coming.
"That will be hard." Enor said knowing how isolated that area of space was "but I will see what can be done. Keep me informed if anything arises. Enor out." He ended the signal on his end and stood up "can someone do something about all this loose wiring in here?" he grumbled and swatted a line of wires hanging from the ceiling.
Ryan sighed a bit, relieved that the term 'yeoman' hadn't been mentioned. Thankfully at least someone in Fleet was content to let him read his own mail.

[Fleet Staff] SD240912.24 - Duty Log "Arrival" - Admiral Jolias Enor
[USS Mayhem, Bridge]
"By order of Starfleet Command Vice Admiral Jolias Enor is hereby promoted to full Admiral and appointed as commander of the reconstituted Alpha Fleet whose operations shall encompass both the Alpha and Gamma quadrants." Jeremy read the message with a smirk "the Admiral is ordered to report to Deep Space Nine immediately and assume command." He looked at Jolias "wow you must have REALLY pissed someone off."
Jole stared at the screen a bit dumbfounded; he looked around and then casually shrugged "must have." He fell back into his seat "set course for deep space nine."
[Deep Space Nine, Operations]
"Fleet reorganization? Again?" Captain Maxwell Chambliss slid his fingers across the console pushing the thin layer of dust away "Alpha Fleet?" He grunted and looked across the operations center "someone change the flag- new standard, Alpha Fleet, and someone get the fleet command offices fixed for golly sakes!"
"The technicians have been working overtime sir- the overhaul has them overwhelmed." Lieutenant Vastiff spoke up.
"Well give them more overtime!" Maxwell sighed "what will the new Admiral think if he gets here and everything is in disarray?"
"I don't know." Vastiff frowned "but they're working as fast as they can sir."
"Just tell them to try and be faster, okay?"
"Understood."
"Sir," Commander Wilhelm interrupted "that Keldon that was docked at Pylon two, they've just detached from the station but we're reading an unusual energy signature emanating from their cargo hold."
Maxwell looked at his ops officer nodding "yes, the Hadok right? They were the ones who brought us the spare parts. What do you think it is?"
"Don't know- trying to get a reading but it seems that- oh wait, energy surge! Massive energy surge! We're receiving a distress signal from them now!"
Maxwell took a few steps forward "What's happening Wilhelm? On screen now!"
"Trying to figure it out…detecting an explosion!" Everyone looked at the view screen as a large explosion ripped through the Keldon's hull. Several pieces of debris hurtled towards the station including one of the Keldon's fins. "Oh boy!"
"Raise shields! Red alert" Maxwell ordered. The shields absorbed most of the debris but the fin grazed part of an upper pylon causing the station to shiver and groan. After a few tense seconds everything settled "what the hell was that?!"
"No idea- will have to look at the sensor logs however, the Hadok is gone- no survivors." Wilhelm grimaced.
Several hours later…
As soon as the airlock cycled Jolias was through. Waiting for him was Captain Maxwell "Admiral, it is a pleasure to meet you."
"I wish I could say them same but about three hours ago I received a nasty gram from a Cardassian Gul demanding to know how one of his ships suddenly exploded after leaving this station." Jolias frowned at the Captain "and then not ten minutes later I received another one from the Bajoran First Minister demanding to know what happened. You can imagine how agitated they were- so, what do you know?"
"Umm… well..." Maxwell fidgeted for a moment before he answered "nothing. We still have people combing the wreckage to see what happened. My operations officer is going through the sensor logs but we still don't know much. Our best guess so far is sabotage."
"Sabotage?" Jolias frowned. Any hope that the command and fleet changes would be fluid were now gone. "Keep me informed of your progress. In the mean time is there somewhere that we can locate fleet operations? Also I need to make a statement to the fleet."
"Yes, we still have the Home Fleet offices up but we've been upgrading the station and have not completely finished. You can send your message at station operations however."
"Good, then we will go there first." As the pair walked Jolias studied the station. He had visited Deep Space Nine only one time pervious, many years earlier when he was still Captain of the USS Warrior. There was no debate- the station was rife with history. Several major events had occurred on the station and several important figures once walked her corridors, but it still didn't change Jolias' mind. As they entered the turbo lift he looked at the Captain "I'm surprised they haven't made this a museum yet." Maxwell simply smiled at the dry comment.
When the lift doors open Jolias followed Maxwell out. The Captain led the Admiral to the communication station "here you go Admiral." Maxwell said and looked at the Lieutenant manning the station "the Admiral here needs a message sent to the entire fleet."
The Lieutenant nodded "one moment sirs. There, you may speak Admiral."
Jolias nodded, not being one for speeches he decided to be concise "To all First Fleet vessels and facilities this is Admiral Jolias Enor. I am officially taking command of the reconstituted Alpha Fleet. Fleet Headquarters will be located at Deep Space Nine. Unless otherwise noted you are to continue with previous orders. Enor out." He nodded his head at the Lieutenant who tapped on the console ending the transmission. "Now Captain, where is my office?"
"This way Admiral…but it's not ready…"
